From Rio Scenarium's sophisticated samba to Rua Mem de Sá forró: a practical route through the venues, bars and sidewalks of the neighborhood that never sleeps.
If Rio is a party, Lapa is the dance floor. Under the arches of the Carioca Aqueduct, the asphalt becomes a stage every Friday and Saturday night, with samba, forró, funk and MPB exploding simultaneously in different venues.
The Venues That Define Lapa
- Rio Scenarium (Rua do Lavradio, 20): Three floors of antique shop turned live music house, with samba de gafieira and chorinho. The setting is cinematic: crystal chandeliers, baroque saints and porcelain dolls surround the tables. Cover: R$ 50 to R$ 80. Reservations recommended for second-floor tables, which overlook the entire dance floor.
- Carioca da Gema (Rua Mem de Sá, 79): More intimate, focused on roots samba and MPB. Capacity for 200 — fills up fast. Cover: R$ 40 to R$ 60. Good option for those who want to listen to music without being crushed by the crowd.
- Lapa 40 Graus (Rua Riachuelo, 97): Larger space with multiple areas and simultaneous music styles — samba in one corner, forró in another, electronic on the rooftop. Cover: R$ 30 to R$ 50.
The Street Is the Show
As important as the venues is what happens on the sidewalk. Rua Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio become impassable from 10 PM to 3 AM on weekends. Hot dog carts, caipirinha vendors (R$ 10 per cup), and spontaneous samba circles pop up on corners. The Rua do Lavradio antique fair happens on the first Saturday of each month, blending collectibles with street draft beer.
Safety and Practical Tips
Lapa has improved greatly in security in recent years, but basics apply: don't carry visible valuables, use Uber to arrive and leave (the easiest meeting point is Largo da Lapa, next to the Arches), and avoid deserted streets behind Rua do Riachuelo after 2 AM. Wear flip-flops or sneakers — the beer-soaked ground guarantees slips in heels.
How to Get There
Metro: Cinelândia station (Line 1), 8-minute walk along Rua Evaristo da Veiga. VLT light rail: Carioca station, 5-minute walk. Uber: ask to be dropped at Largo da Lapa or the corner of Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio.
When to Go
Friday and Saturday nights are the main nights. Action starts at 9 PM and peaks after 11 PM. Sunday samba rodas in Lapa are mellower — good option for the experience without the maximum crowd. Outside Carnival, January is the quietest month.
Who Is This For
Night owls who want to dance until dawn, tourists seeking raw street culture, groups of friends open to improvisation, and couples who don't mind sweating through forró.
