The world's largest replanted urban forest offers a peaceful refuge, waterfalls, and fresh air just minutes away from Rio's hot asphalt and bustle.
There is no way to fully understand the soul of Rio de Janeiro without getting lost (metaphorically) in the intense green of the Tijuca Forest. Being the largest replanted urban forest in the world, this giant green lung divides the city and offers a peaceful refuge, fresh waterfalls, and clean air just minutes away from the hot asphalt.
The Tijuca Forest is a massive and democratic complex. For those who prefer light strolling, Sector A (Forest) offers paved roads where you can walk peacefully to the Taunay Waterfall (Cascatinha Taunay), a beautiful 35-meter cascade, or have a picnic on the lawns of Açude da Solidão.
For the more adventurous, the park offers dozens of kilometers of interconnected trails, such as the famous Waterfall Circuit (Circuito das Cachoeiras), which passes through various waterfalls perfect for a refreshing dip, or the hike to Mayrink Chapel, a small pink church built in the middle of the woods that feels like a fairytale setting.
Cariocando Tip: The climate inside the forest is always a few degrees lower than in the city. It's the perfect refuge for the most intense summer days. Bring swimwear, water, snacks, and don't forget insect repellent!
