With the city's best effort-to-reward ratio, Pedra Bonita offers a 30-minute trail and an incredible panoramic view from the South Zone to Barra.
If you want a spectacular panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro but lack mountaineering experience, the Pedra Bonita trail is your ideal destination. Located in the Tijuca National Park, this is undoubtedly the mountain with the best effort-to-reward ratio in the entire city.
The hike takes only 30 to 40 minutes on average. The path is well-demarcated, wide, and flanked by lush Atlantic Forest, providing shade for almost the entire route. It's an extremely democratic outing, frequented by families, groups of friends, and even physically fit seniors.
Upon reaching the summit, the forest opens up to a massive flat rock platform. The view is absolutely breathtaking: on one side, the imposing Pedra da Gávea seen from the front; on the other, the vastness of São Conrado Beach, Morro Dois Irmãos, and the long coastline of Barra da Tijuca. It's the perfect place to sit, take a deep breath, and contemplate the grandeur of the Marvelous City.
Cariocando Tip: The trail starts very close to the hang-gliding ramp in São Conrado. After descending Pedra Bonita, be sure to stop by the ramp and watch the colorful take-offs of hang gliders and paragliders as they launch toward the sea.
