Telegraph Rock: Instagram's Most Famous Optical Illusion

Hidden in Barra de Guaratiba, this trail offers wild landscapes and the chance to take the classic photo hanging from an 'abyss'.

Hidden in the Pedra Branca State Park, in the neighborhood of Barra de Guaratiba (West Zone), Telegraph Rock has become a worldwide phenomenon. You have probably seen photos of people seemingly hanging on the edge of an abyss, holding on with just one hand, with the blue sea in the background. The secret? A perfect photographic optical illusion!

The trail to reach this scenario takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour, requiring some stamina due to steep climbs and the dirt terrain. Along the way, contact with the untouched nature of the Guaratiba region is constant, with natural viewpoints that reveal the beauty of the wild beaches below.

Upon reaching the famous pointed rock, the trick is revealed: there is a solid ground plateau just below the rock. When the photo is taken from the right angle, cutting the floor out of the frame, it creates the illusion of being on the edge of a precipice. Besides the photographic fun, the panoramic view of Restinga da Marambaia and the wild beaches is of unique beauty.

Cariocando Tip: As the location has become world-famous, lines to take a picture on the rock can take hours on weekends. The great secret is to arrive as early as possible, preferably at sunrise, or visit on a weekday.
